A new website showcasing the very best of Orkney food and drink has been launched today (Tuesday, 10 June).
The site – www.orkneyfoodanddrink.com – aims to promote local food and drink firms, while highlighting news, events, awards and other activities in the sector. The site will also tie in closely with the new Orkney.com website – due for launch shortly – and social media networks.
Edgar Balfour, development manager for Orkney food, drink and crafts, said: “Given the economic significance of food and drink for Orkney, we felt it was vital to have a dedicated online presence for the sector. The new site is attractive, easy to use and will act as the first port of call for anyone looking to find out about Orkney food and drink, or learn more about our member and associate businesses. It’ll also be the place to keep up to date with news on food and drink related events and activities in Orkney, such as this year’s Orkney Food Festival.”
Businesses included on the new site are either full or associate members of Orkney Food and Drink. According to Mr Balfour, membership had increased significantly in recent months, with 20 full members and 40 associate members now listed. He also said membership fees had been reduced to half of their previous levels – to £30 for the year – in a bid to encourage more firms to come on board.
“The big rise in businesses seeking membership is very encouraging and is undoubtedly down to an increasing recognition that cooperation and joint promotion is vital for the continued success of Orkney’s food and drink sector,” said Mr Balfour. “It’s a kind of strength in numbers approach, so the more members the merrier. Everyone in Orkney knows how good our food and drink products are, but the more we do to let the rest of the world know, the better. The new site will help enormously in getting the message out about what we’re doing here.”
David Nicol, managing director of site developers NB Communication, said: “It’s been a real privilege to work alongside Edgar to develop an attractive, usable and useful site, which is also optimised for smart-phones and tablets. We’re confident that the site will help to promote Orkney’s fantastic food and drink sector far and wide, and we look forward to monitoring the site’s performance once it’s live.”
